Portia Young

Portia Young is a Song Writer, Gospel Recording Artist, Psalmist and Teacher. As the founder and director of Freedom Ministries Unlimited, her sole mission is to administer the hope and love of Jesus Christ into the lives of those who are lost, forgotten and downtrodden.
With a very unique and unpredictable style Portia boldly administers the word of God through her songs with praise, worship, and adoration to the Lord. Her drive is to develop an atmosphere that is totally yielded to the Holy Spirit with an outcome of healing and deliverance.

Portia was born and raised in Joliet Illinois, and the youngest of 4 sisters and 2 brothers; she is the daughter of the late Reverend Joseph C. Wright Jr. As a young adult, she experienced the God given gift of writing songs; most inspired with fully arranged melodies. It wasn’t until she gave her heart to Jesus that she discovered the gift of song writing.

After becoming a member at her local church, Living Word Christian Center, Pastor Bill Winston, she joined the praise and worship team. There she later became one of the praise and worship team leaders. In extension of her musical gifts, she made her contribution as a writer and lead vocalist on the song entitled, “All Glory Honor and Praise” and writer of the songs entitled, “Just Because I Believe”, and “Crossing Over to the Other Side. She has also participated in writing and recording songs used in biblical dramas.

Currently the major ministry in Portia’s life is the outreach prison ministry of her local church

Portia's 2004 debut CD release I’M READY NOW, produced by Joe Wright of JoRon Studios in Midlothian, Illinois, harnesses the unique and artistic sound of this aggressive tyro, as it continues to move rapidly across the airwaves of radio and television. A mixed genre of Inspirational/Gospel songs ranging from worship adoration and praise with a twist of salsa to a touch of hip-hop flavor and a sound of smooth jazz, all the way back down home with a mixed medley hymnal. Positively “a must have” for those who can appreciate the word of God through songs.

During the month of June 2004, Portia was featured on the new artist showcase of the Sunday Morning Spirit of Love and Inspiration Gospel Show, aired on 107.5 WGCI FM Chicago radio station with hostess, Effie Rolfe. The show featured the songs “Lord of All” and “Now Faith” from her current CD release. Later the song “Release the Pressure (Like David Danced)” began weekly airplay on Chicago’s AM 1390’s weekend Gospel Hip Hop Show.

Portia has been featured on the Tecora Rogers show, which airs on Monday nights weekly at 10:00 p.m. on Chicago Access Cable channel 19. In early fall 2004 her music was incepted on Indy’s newest Christian radio station, WHTJ 1690-AM, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Portia is the devoted wife of Marlon Young. She is the proud stepmother of one daughter.
